Focus on FontFocus, I would suggest. It is a technology promising to radically improve human perception of rendered fonts. And it is not as patent-encumbered as others. Include it in freetype library and conquer everyone ! :>

Hi all,
Tobias , this might look like a flame, but that is what people said about GNU/Linux years ago & still are saying. But we know where its heading right. Even if for the sake of argument let's say what the designers say about open-source software is true, it doesn't matter. For as long as they are under an FSF/Open source license the possibility to add stuff to it by the community exists and that in itself is a huge step forwards. Comments most welcome

Two corrections:
• The interviewee’s name is Jon Phillips, not John Philips.
• A more important correction: Both legally and etymologically, ‘no licence’ means no permission, not no restrictions. If you want everyone to be free to use/copy/modify/distribute a work without restriction, then you must explicitly give a license to do so or explicitly place it in the public domain. In absence of such a license, no-one has permission.

You should browse the typophile.com forums to see what pro designers say about open-source tools. They are very attached to the pro software they're used to and regard the free alternatives as toys.
