Just wanted to say thank you for all the hard work everyone does on full circle. It’s very polished and I plan to have several issues laying around during the Software Freedom Day event were having in New Mexico on Sept 15th. Keep up the good work.

Is this magazine on sale just in the USA, or in the UK, or in Europe? I’m asking cos I haven’t seen it in any stores here (UK) but as a Feisty user (Grrr!!) I’d like to check it out

Ronnie: no it’s not for sale in any country. It’s a free magazine available through PDF download

Excellent magazine. But I guess its number of pages should be increased. And tend to make it more commercialize. I understand it might require lots of hard work. But I believe advertisement space can be sold. initially there might not be too many advertisers but gradually mass will built up. this is only 4 th edition but i am sure it will grow much better than any other commercial computer magazine.

Ronnie: you want me to add more pages to just fill them with advertisements? Not gonna happen. If the magazine was to go to print then i’d see your point…

Thank you all so much for providing this excellent resource! I will make use of them in my next ubuntu presentations… Keep up the great work!

Re: more pages/ads… Hm, I understand your reaction but I do not think the idea is so bad to not consider it at all. If you do not ned/want money to keep fullcircle running, then you could give the money to projects in need — or set up a system where readers can vote on projects to support. I think this would be very useful to the community and a senseful allocation of financial resources (e.g., think of a Dell ad about an ubuntu-preinstalled box). Anyway, think about it.

Well done on another issue and the screen formatted page layout works really well. I think the page count is just right and it would be a shame to litter it with advertisements. However, I don’t think anyone would criticise the occasional sponsored article if it was relevant to the readership and made clear that it was sponsored. Although discrete ads on your web site could achieve the same income and not spoil the publication. We all appreciate that bandwidth can be costly.

Ronnie, don’t be so hard on Sunny, better understand him: he wants more content and does not mind to see ads if that is going to give him (us) more content. It is very important for Ubuntu and community that Dell is giving Ubuntu as an alternative to Windows. It is the first major company that directly supports not only some generic Linux but Ubuntu specifically. Maybe Dell or some other company (involved with Ubuntu or not) see some interest and is willing to pay. That will attract others to follow and magazine could only benefit as there could be some buck or two for authors and others at FullCircle.

After all, we all need new box (computer) from time to time and that is definitely not free.

@Mladen: The problem is, how would whatever money that went to the people at FullCircle get distributed? Where would money be collected? Who would divide it up? How would they deal with international tax laws, payment systems, currency conversion, etc.? (Besides, the ads would probably have to fall under the same license as the magazine, which has its own implications…) The overhead could negate any possible benefits, unless somebody big comes up and decides to “buy” the whole thing (or, more specifically, all the people behind it).

And I hear of people running *buntu on 500 MHz x86 miniature fanless PC/devices… so I’m not sure about the new box argument…

When are you going to get the view in browser links on these pages?

Rob: They should already be there – just click on one. It depends on your PDF reader, too.

    Great issue!

One more angle on the ads.

I feel that Ubuntu and Linux related advertising would be a service to us readers, if it was done correctly (in moderation, appropriate products, ad placement, etc.). I don’t have the time or energy to go chasing after every company that produces Ubuntu-friendly products, but appropriate advertising could help me keep on top of what’s available.

Besides, you’ve probably got hosting costs and you’d probably work more efficiently with a bigger nicer monitor, right?

This is a great magazine. Its nice and compact.
Those of you looking for commercial type content should check out o3 magazine. It is free and available in PDF as well (http://www.o3magazine.com)

There are a couple of problems though:

    a) PDF links do not work in Preview (MacOS X)

    b) You need to export the PDF in Scribus as single page when its formated for the screen, otherwise PDF viewers will display two pages at half-size.

This is a great little magazine though!

Rob: There isn’t a specific way to print out the magazine – it’s up to you! Just remember, if you have a different paper size, choose fit to page.

It looks like, I didnt explain clearly about my intention of increasing the magazine page. I dont know how the management of this magazine works. But on searching on internet, I found full circle to be only magazine devoted about the information on ubuntu. I don’t know about ambitions or plans of people working on this magazine. But I would really like this magazine to grow as it is targeted toward ubuntu. My intention of suggesting increasing page and selling space for advetisement was to make it complete ubuntu magazine same as PC world or MAC world. Ubuntu is moving from geeks world to novice people’s world and I believe information is the key to help this transition to happen as much faster pace and magazine is one of the important communication method.
Unless, you dont want to be just in electronic media and wants to make it low profile magazine then its fine the way it is. Placing advertisement will not only give us more information about the product relevent to linux but also helps you to keep away from financial trouble. Probably you are not an organization, so you dont know how to distribute money or resources. But I guess, that money can be used to move full circle from electronic media to hard copy magazine. Its kind of slow and gradual process rather than one night transformation. Microsoft started their business in a small garadge and now become world’s richest software company. I dont mean full circle be a billion dollar company but it can be atleast one decent magazine to be on our magazine shelf. But it all depends on ambition and plan to dream big.

Ronnie: I know what you mean Sunny but think about it this way: if it costs $1 to get an issue printed then with 30,000 downloads, we’d need $30,000 per month! And that doesn’t include shipping costs, so make that another $30,000. Also to get your magazine in print might take 3 or 4 weeks through the post, would you really want to wait that long? So now we need about $60,000 per month, what happens if donations and ads only get us $50,000? Who pays the other $10,000? And finally, it’d take a ginormous amount of planning and effort to get the magazine distributed worldwide! Who wants to volunteers to sit and label 30,000 magazines and haul them to the post office? Not me!

I would LOVE full circle to be in print, it’d be a dream come true for me, but unless someone can guarantee us about $100,000 per month I can’t see it happening i’m afraid to say but, if anyone has any brain waves… i’m all ears! :)
