Why are you using a non-free format for this newsletter?

Ronnie: Because there is no better format for a magazine than PDF. Things like HTML are inferior alternatives.

The link on page 8 for gnome hide and seek worked when this article was first written in January, but the getdeb site does not list this package for feisty. I clicked other versions at the top of the page and selected edgy, and there it was! I installed it and it seems to work with feisty.

I think erez was referring to the garbage use of Flash. PDF is quite open.

You should consider using Javascript as per something akin to Amazon’s preview feature.

    Flash is a no no.

Please not Flash (rhymes with crash)! There’s no flash player for AMD64!

Ronnie: don’t panic, the Flash thing is only a PREVIEW, to let you flick through the issue. The PDF download is, and always will be, our number one priority.

Just 2 points in response to some of the comments here.

    1) Flash for 64 bit distributions

This might even make a decent article :) You most certainly can run Flash while using a 64 bit browser in a 64 bit distro. You need to use nspluginwrapper though to wrap the flash plugin in. It used to be more difficult, now there’s a Debian package available (in testing and unstable). I know that this has been ported to Ubuntu as well and will be available for gutsy for sure, but you should be able to get it now. Or you can do things the slightly harder way and install without a package :) The original is here:
    http://gwenole.beauchesne.info/projects/nspluginwrapper/
Here’s some threads on the ubuntu forums:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=341727
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=476924

Or you can install and run a 32 bit browser into the 64 bit OS. Then you can run Flash (and java, which there is no solution for for a 64 bit browser, at least not until the next java version comes out).

    2) About PDF format for the distribution. If you want to stick with a free format you can consider using djvu instead. I assume that the initial (internal) release is postscript, in which case converting to either pdf or djvu is just as easy. You can even put up both formats and give the user a choice :) Djvu should be just fine for an online magazine and letting people know that it exists is a good thing. It’s also smaller and faster than pdf. Viewers utilities etc:

I don’t understand how can you use a computer in other language than English! For me it’s a big mystery. I had some apps in my own language and I was totally lost, I couldn’t find anything. Some things should be left as they are.
