00:40 | WELCOME and INTRO:
02:34 | SINCE LAST TIME

Robin
- Discovering various breakages in Ubuntu 11.10; Mumble killed my laptop (maybe not) re-installed 11.10.
- Now on Gnome fallback in place of Xfce or Unity. Tested Linux Mint 12 – missed bag of fail on Gnome 3.0 and MATE.
Dave
- Failed to install 11.10 on my netbook, while I still prefer 11.04 on my desktop (behind the curve, I know…); sad to see support ended for the Nexus One; experiencing the general difficulties people have had with transitioning one Google account to another; played around with an Asus EEE-pad transformer. Lots of debate as to the future of Ubuntu – I remain neutral in my judgment, though I am aware of the often self-fulfilling nature of such prophecies. Introduced girlfriend to Ubuntu on a Netbook.
Alan
- Playing Minecraft. Really.

In this episode, interviewing Paul Levy and Becky Hogg.
Just me, Robin Catling hosting things today, but I’m not alone, as we have not one but two guests.
First up is Paul Levy, from Cats3000, Rational Madness and the Critical Incident un-conference, who will be talking about Learning to Dance with Spiders.
We’ll follow that with an interview I recorded about a month ago (before I got caught up with OGG Camp). Our second guest is Becky Hogg, journalist, activist and author of the book Barefoot into Cyberspace.

Full Circle Podcast is also a proud member of the Tech Podcasts Network.

Cats3000 and Rational Madness
Texts theatrical performance
Critical Incident unconference
which together lead to Learning to Dance with Spiders:
“Led by Paul Levy. Paul will share some experiments from his forthcoming book about living consciously with your mobile phone and staying intact in the world of social media. Truly ground-breaking, uncomfortable, and usable.”

Also discussed:

Jaron Lanier You are not a Gadget
Sherri Turkel Alone Together

Paul Levy’s site combines Cats3000 and Rational Madness at http://rationalmadness.wordpress.com/, where you will also find the e-book The Collusion of Mediocrity.
It’s a little early for the Critical Incident un-Conference for 2012, but take a look over the conference notes for last year and this year over at Critical Incident website, www.thecriticalincident.com/
26:48 | Interview: Becky Hogge
Author of Barefoot into Cyberspace – Adventures in Search of Techno Utopia
Through activism and journalism covering hacker counter-culture, from Stallman and Lessig, the Chaos Club to WikiLeaks Julian Assange and Rop Gonggrijp, quote:
“I think most of what were fighting still today in the world is incompetence. Most of what we’re fighting is stupidity, and maybe a little bit of opportunism. There is also the ominous, control-seeking large corporate interests.”
“We come in peace. We’re not called Chaos Computer Club because we cause chaos. If anything, a lot of our collective work has actually prevented chaos by pointing out that maybe we should lay some decent virtual foundations before we build any more virtual skyscrapers.”

A computer industry veteran, Simon Phipps came on with an actual box of hats which he proceeded the change at speed, reminding me of Tommy Cooper in his heyday.

Simon has come up through hands-on roles as field engineer, programmer and systems analyst, run a software publishing company, worked with OSI standards in the eighties, on the first commercial collaborative conferencing software in the nineties, and helped introduce both Java and XML at IBM.

A founding Director of the Open Mobile Alliance, Simon is Chief Strategy Officer at independent software company ForgeRock and Director of the Open Source Initiative. Find his essays at webmink.com.

00:40 | WELCOME and INTRO: About OGG Camp 11
OGG Camp is a joint venture organised by the Ubuntu UK podcast and Linux outlaws teams, taking over from the sadly departed LUG Radio live. In this, it’s third year, OGG Camp came South to the Farnham Maltings venue. These are some of the highlights of what happened on Saturday, Day One. None of the names have been changed to protect the guilty…
02:19 | Arrival at OGG Camp 11
02:49 | Opening, greetings, notes on the Unconference: the Ubuntu UK Podcast (UUPC) and Linux Outlaws teams, with acknowledgements to Jon Spriggs for the Campfire Manager conference scheduler.
09:12 | Introducing Simon Phipps, who presented the opening session of the unconference to a packed main hall, on Software Freedom.
10:10 | Simon Phipps’ presentation on software freedom. Here’s a shortened version of the presentation which ran to 35 minutes in its entirety.
24:31 | Introducing Karen Sandler: legal eagle, formerly of the Software Freedom Law Center and newly appointed executive director at the Gnome Foundation.
24:55 | Presentation from Karen Sandler. Karen wasn’t due on the scheduled track, but stepped into an unexpected gap to talk about something, dare I say, very close to her heart? Opening up embedded software in medical devices.
41: 48 | Introducing the Panel Discussion

Dan Lynch – Linux Outlaws – Chairman
Karen Sandler – Gnome Foundation and ex Software Freedom Law Center
Simon Phipps – Forgerock and Open Software Initiative

This is an extra, irregular, short-form podcast, which is intended to be a side-branch of the main Full Circle Podcast. Somewhere to put all the general technology, non-Ubuntu news and opinions, hobby-horses and kruft that doesn’t fit anywhere else. Be prepared for a healthy dose of British sarcasm.
