Show Notes

01:28 | WELCOME and INTRO:

02:00 | Since Last Time

Tony - Has been getting to grips with his Nexus 4, so far he’s impressed with it and despite some criticism of the battery life has found this to be more than adequate for him. Tony has also been using a programme called MultiSystem to create Bootable Multi distro USB drives. It was a bit convoluted to install as it meant adding the repository to synaptic (here is the howto) to download and install the packages but it works well. He now have an 8Gb drive with several distros including a couple of utility distros for partitioning and data rescue. Finally he discovered Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs support Linux on the web, providing a Linux version of one of their PAYE software packages for download.

Freaky Clown – Had built a laptop based around a Raspberry Pi to show at the Manchester Girl Geeks Barcamp but unfortunately couldn’t show it at the event as the postal service let him down and a part he needed failed to arrive in time. The completed project can be seen here: http://thegreyhats.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/so-i-have-two-raspberry-pis-i-love-them.html

Les - Has been very busy organising the Raspberry Jamboree with is new business partner Dan, attended the Manchester Girl Geeks Bracamp with Olly who became the AV Tech Crew for the day recording audio and video and taking photographs while grabbing interviews with the organisers. Les has also been hacking a bash script together to do network checks on various remote servers his company owns.

Olly - Also attended the Raspberry Jamboree and assisted Les and Dan crewing along with Jonathan Archer of RossLUG as Les mentioned also attended the Manchester Girl Geeks Bracamp with Les and recorded all of the audio in the Plunge and took a few photos aswell. Olly also recorded a couple of interviews at both events which will be played out later in the show and on Episode 35. He has also been been dabbling with Nvidia drivers once again with the goal of running Steam under Linux but with little success and has now given up on the idea.

03:17 | WELCOME and INTRO:

03:50 | Since Last Time

Jon - Hasn’t done much Geeking recently due to most of his gear floating across various oceans to their destination, Wellington – New Zealand. He’s been mainly packing lately.

Les - Has been Geeking around with the his new 512Mb Raspberry Pi and some Arduino goodness. He also purchased an Archos 80 Cobalt which he got from Tesco on a cracking deal, although it’s not a Nexus 7 he is still really pleased with it and it’s performance. He’s also been engaged in Hacking his Boss’s Linksys Router and installing ddwrt on it.

Tony - Hasn’t been up to much in the way of geeky stuff especially as he bought two tablets on the run up to Christmas, he visited the in-laws over Christmas. He did find the time to install Airdroid on his Nexus 7 after a recommendation from Les.

Freaky Clown – Has just completed an Open Learning introductory course in Computing and Programming course run by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Olly – Went away to Newcastle for Christmas and New Year, taking just his Nexus 7 and his DSLR Camera as the ultimate test in can a tablet do all the tasks he would normally do with a laptop while travelling. Apart from a few niggles with Google Drive not being able to create hyper -links within a document, it performed admirably. He was going to talk about his adventures with Steam Beta but since installing the latest bleeding edge Nvidia Proprietary drivers which the Steam client requires, he’s hand no end of trouble with graphics to the point where his main box freezes before booting to the login screen. Olly has also been listening back to all the old episodes of Full Circle Podcast to get some inspiration for new features and upgraded his Samsung Galaxy S2 to Cyanogenmod 10.1 nightly build.

Les – Has been looking at the “How-To” on installing Ubuntu 12.10 onto an Asus EEE PC on page 15.

Tony – Has been reading the review of Super Scratch Programming on page 46 as this would make a great addition to a Raspberry Pi that a budding young programmer may have received for Christmas. Les talks about a robot controlled by a Raspberry Pi using Scratch, the video of which can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4d6UC6V1dD0

Jon – Has been looking at the new “How-To” series which has started in this issue on Blender as it’s something he has always wanted to try but felt over-faced by.

Freaky – Has also been looking at the Blender how to but from a slightly different perspective as he has already trained on another proprietary 3D modelling package called Maya.

Olly – Has been reading with some jealousy the article on the Steam Beta on page 60 which promoted him to try and install the Open Beta. He has also been reading the review of the LPIC-1 Study Guide in the Ubuntu Certified article on page 61.

Show Notes

01:50 | WELCOME and INTRO:

02:10 | Since Last Time

Les - Has started a new job and is really enjoying it, he’s also moved away from Ubuntu and is now using Crunchbang Linux (a very lightweight distribution) and spreading the good word to others. He has also been playing around with his Raspberry Pi coupled with Arduino boards to make some interesting projects.

Tony - Loved his 16Gb WiFi Nexus 7 that he just had to have the 32Gb HSPA + version when it was released just over a week after the last Podcast came out. There were a few teething problems including BBC Iplayer not supporting the Nexus 7 under 4.2 Jelly Bean and sorting out the APN Setting for Giff Gaff. He also attended the amalgamated Preston and Blackpool GeekUp Christmas Meal as did the other members of the Podcast.

Olly - Ran into his first performance problem with his new Gnomebuntu install, trying to do a multi channel audio project in Audacity cause hard psychical lock-ups. He too hold out any longer and also purchase a Nexus 7 32Gb HSPA + Version like Tony. He also attempted one of the upgrade paths for Linux Mint to take him to 14 “Nadia” however it didn’t go according to plan as there were issues with Virtual Box which baulked the installation and in the end Olly had to do a fresh install.

Jon was supposed to be recording but at the last minute was called away to a teleconference which was related to the sad news that he will no longer be a full time presenter on the show, he will be moving back to New Zealand in the New Year. He may make an appearance on the show from time to time doing features and so on but due to the time difference it isn’t likely to be a regular thing.

08:49 | NEWS

New from UDS 13.04, there will no longer be any Alpha Releases for the main distribution, the first Beta will be released on March 28th 2013. http://www.theorangenotebook.com/2012/10/uds-r-rise-of-the-quality-machines.html

Following on from the last episode where Olly suggested it would have been a better idea to have a dedicated shopping lense rather than integrating the shopping search into the dash, there is now a dedicated lens has been created by Mark Jtully.http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/11/how-to-install-a-dedicated-amazon-shopping-lens-in-ubuntu

Skype 4.1 for Linux is released, major new feature for this release is the support for Microsoft Accounts http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/Skype-for-Linux-4-1-arrives-with-Microsoft-account-support-1750705.html

Debate raged on at UDS Copenhagen regarding replacing the ageing X.org with Wayland for desktop compositing, as with previous UDSs no firm conclusion was reached as to making it default for 13.04, it is unlikely to be for this release. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTIxOTc

VideoLAN VLC Media player the popular Open Source Media player which appears in most Linux distributions has now been successfully re licensed from GPL V2 to LGPL this follows the re licensing of LibVLC the core C and C++ library for the media player which is used widely within Linux Distros. http://www.jbkempf.com/blog/post/2012/How-to-properly-relicense-a-large-open-source-project

Olly – Has been looking at the “How-To” series beginning in this months issue, Create A Theft-Proof Computer on page 12, he has also followed up with the next instalment of the KdenLive guide.

Les – Great minds think alike, he has also been looking at Part 4 of Ronnie’s KdenLive tutorials on page 26 of the Magazine. He discusses how OpenShot is good for beginners and for those who want to quickly put together video projects however if you need some more advanced tools for video editing, such as remastering physical film KdenLive is the tool for the job.

Tony – Has been looking at the Command & Conquer article on page 6 which looks at Dual Booting your system with Linux and Windows and gives you hints and tips on how to keep your system running well with both OSs. He has also been looking at the Community section particularly the My Story articles on page 44.

Phil left us a comment on the website “You talked about he Nexus and the Kindle Fire and talked about the limit of no SD slot. I have been turned onto the NOOK primarily the Nook Color. I have the original OS untouched in my nook and I boot to a full install of cyanogen mod 7 (android 2.3) on the SD card. I have the CPU overclocked to 1.2 GHz and I still have great battery life. I plan to move to cyanogen mod 10 (android 4) this weekend time permitted”.

We also have had several comments on the website and Google + page commenting on the poor audio quality of episode 31.

Jon – Has been reading the Humble Indie Bundle V review in the Ubuntu Games section on page 54 of the magazine. He also discusses the news of Steam coming to Linux

Olly – Is considering getting back into producing videos for Youtube and looked with interest at the second part of the Kdenlive Series written by Ronnie on page 16. Considering his woes with ecrypfs back in August he decided to check out the Encyption How-To on page 13 to see if he could pick up any pointers.

Tony – Unfortunately this month Tony has been rather busy with University and placement work he´s not had as much time to read the magazine as he’d like.

We had some feedback from Grant Paton-Simpson via the website he suggested Tony should check out his statistics application called SOFA which is Python based and is licensed under the Affero GPL. Grant is one of the developers of SOFA, it´s always nice to here about new software projects, if you are a developer and you would like to publicise your project please get in touch.

We also had some feedback from Mike Stewart, again via the website who was suggesting that we seemed abit sleepy in Episode 30, Olly explained that due to a number of technical difficulties the record time had been quite lengthy and we were feeling the effects. We will endeavour to make the show a lot pacey-er in future!!

00:30 | WELCOME and INTRO:

01:40 | Since Last Time
Well since this is the first podcast by the new presenters we’ll just recap the last couple of weeks prior to the recording:
Tony- has installed the latest release of Linux Mint, version 13 (codenamed Maya) and been experimenting with it since it’s release. He also attended the Raspberry Jam event held at MadLab in Manchester on 9th June along with other members of Blackpool LUG.
Olly- has been studying the Red Hat Certified Engineer using self study material using a mixture of VirtualBox and a home server running CentOS to do this. He has also decided to move away from the Unity Desktop to Gnome 3 and discusses moving his laptop to LXDE desktop.
Jon- has been trying to setup network printing on a home server running CentOS and sharing it to various Windows PCs, however he struggled to achieve this in the end switching to Fedora which rectified the problem.
Les- has been playing with his latest acquisition a Raspberry Pi among other things successfully playing media via a large format TV!! He has also been learning Python and PHP for various projects at work and migrating a web database site at work, with a few technical glitches!!

08:08 | Raspberry Jam Manchester Review
Raspberry Jams are user group meetings, this one being the first of it’s kind being held in the country, all of the hosts attended the event which was held at the Manchester Digital Laboratories (MadLab) http://madlab.org.uk/.

09:08 | CHUG – An Impromptu Recording
A round table discussion of Raspberry Jams, their purpose and what will be going on at the event and general Linux/Open Source topics including LPI’s new Linux Essentials training scheme, held on the train between Jon, Les and Tony on their way to the event. Apologies for the quality of the audio on this segment.

Also Dan is hoping to promote the Global Game Jam which is an annual event which takes place at the end of January every year, which hopefully will be held in Salford more information available here. Dan also hopes to be able to put on a presentation/demonstration at the upcoming Manchester Mini Maker Faire details later.
The discussion moves to the future of events similar to this and to the future of the Raspberry Pi itself.
There will be another Manchester Raspberry Jam, as yet the date is still to be confirmed, we will keep you posted in future episodes.
Following on from the pre-recorded interview there follows a short studio discussion on the facilities at MadLab and the Omniversity programme that they run, more information can be found here.
